It is this kind of immersive storytelling that pulled me into the world of Spiritfarer and kept me emotionally hooked throughout, making it much more than just a game This really gave me the sense that Gwen and Stella really are/were best friends. Gwen supports you until you know enough about running the barge that when she goes off the emotional deep end you can support her and keep everything ticking over no problem. I genuinely didn’t even notice it happening, something (amongst many) that Thunder Lotus should be applauded for. I think one of the things that impressed me most was how seamlessly the story shifts from Gwen supporting you, to you supporting Gwen. I played through from beginning to end in one playthrough, very comfortable with what I was doing. However, I didn’t feel I needed to do that with Spiritfarer, in large part due to Gwen’s tutelage. I played through the snowy Chapter 1 of RDR2 in its entirety for just that reason. I’m someone who generally plays a game for a couple of hours to learn it and then restarts at the beginning with the knowledge of the game’s mechanics. I think part of this is that she is so instrumental in showing you the ropes, both of the ship and of the game. I needed some bright jelly near the end of the game and doing Gwen’s event without her was very emotional. However, I didn’t miss any of the spirits quite as much as I missed Gwen. Saying goodbye to these spirits really broke my heart. Saying goodbye to them was a lot harder than saying goodbye to Gwen. Thinking of spirits like Alice, Stanley, Atul, and in particular Summer who reminded me of a friend I lost to cancer. There were other spirits who’s exits certainly hit me harder. For the rest of the game, I would walk past the door to her house and miss her presence on the barge. Losing Gwen certainly awakened me to just how beautiful and sad and brilliant Spiritfarer really is, and certainly tugged on my heart strings. At that point I hadn’t really gotten to the emotional core of the game yet and was mostly just curious to see what happened. She certainly was the first spirit I took to the Everdoor. Obviously, she is the very first spirit you pick up and judging from what I have read, she tends to be the first spirit that most people take to the Everdoor. To cook two different types of food you need to upgrade your kitchen from the blueprint table.Of all the spirits that you host and guide to the Everdoor, I miss Gwen the most.
